Bayan Toroi, 24 June 2018 – This weekend, the director of Prague Zoo Miroslav Bobek, together with the Czech ambassador in Mongolia Jiří Brodský presented a gift of eight motorcycles with a total price of CZK 130 000 to the wardens of the Strictly Protected Area Great Gobi A. In this manner Prague Zoo contributes to the protection of this extraordinarily valuable territory, with exceptional flora and fauna. Its goal is to support the Gobi A area especially in the protection of Wild Camels, who do not live anywhere else in Mongolia.

“We are continuing to transport Przewalski's Horses from Europe to Mongolia and we are supporting connected activities, but our interest has extended also to the protection of other endangered hoofed animals. In addition to the Mongolian Saiga, this especially concerns the Wild Camel – a type entirely different from the domestic Bactrian Camel,” stated Prague Zoo director Miroslav Bobek. “The motorcycles are absolutely essential for the work of the wardens of the Gobi A, where approximately five hundred of these camels live. The wardens monitor an area the size of Switzerland, where the difference between the lowest temperature in winter and the highest summer temperature is almost 80 degrees Celsius. They guard the region against poachers and gold diggers, they monitor the state of the water sources, collect camera traps, collect samples and so on.”
Upon today's presentation of the motorcycles, the Czech ambassador in Mongolia Jiří Brodský stated the following: “This is the first step in engaging Prague Zoo in activities within the Strictly Protected Area of the Great Gobi A. As with the transports of Przewalski's Horses and other activities in the neighbouring Gobi B area, here also Prague Zoo is contributing very visibly to supporting the good name which our country enjoys in Mongolia.”
Projects of Prague Zoo for the protection of endangered species are financed especially from the “two crowns” from the admission price and from the collection fund We Help Them to Survive. Contributions can be made by crediting any amount of your choice to the bank account. Its IBAN (International Bank Account Number, used in cross border transactions) is CZ24 0100 0000 4368 0466 0247, the SWIFT code (bank identifier code) is KOMBCZPPXXX.
