The baby in Mawar’s arms in one of the photos I took on the second day after its birth. Photo: Miroslav Bobek, Prague Zoo As if I would have anticipated it. In spite of it being a holiday and that we had been closed for weeks due to COVID, I set off on the morning of November 17, 2020, to the zoo. As soon as I arrived, I received a message that Mawar, the female of Sumatran orangutan, had started to give birth. Before half past eleven the baby was...

Prague Zoo has been keeping tayras since 2004, the first successful breeding of this species was in 2011 and it was the first tayra cub to be born in the Czech Republic. Male Chinese pangolin Gun Bao. Photo: Taipei Zoo Just as with many of our other plans, the covid-19 pandemic complicated and delayed the pangolins’ arrival to Prague Zoo. But now we know we’ll be able to welcome them at the end of March, when a pair of Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla) will arrive from Taipei Zoo: a female, Run Hou Tang, and a male, Gun Bao.

Photo: Petr Hamerník, Prague Zoo I spent my very first weekend as Prague Zoo’s director in the office. During that weekend I also wrote down ten points where I tried to define what our future approach to nature conservation projects for endangered species would be. These were and still are one of my priorities. Based on this document, we then started to...

Historically, this is only the sixth time that the world's greatest accolade for zoos has been awarded. The WAZA Conservation Award went to Zoo Prague for its Return of the Wild Horses project. Photo: Petr Hamerník, Prague Zoo As of today, Prague Zoo is the holder of the highest award from the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the WAZA Conservation Award. It received it for the Return of the Wild Horses project and for its long-standing contribution to the efforts to conserve the Przewalski's horse. This is only the sixth time that the...

Photo: Miroslav Bobek, Prague Zoo Prior to my last trip to Cameroon, one of the things I noted was that we should find out more about African palm weevils and their production. I wrote about them here a while ago: almost as thick as a finger and sometimes two index finger phalanges long, the larvae of Rhynchophorus phoenicis are a popular delicacy in some...

The first ever red panda twins to be born at Prague Zoo are a male and a female. Visitors can see them in the outdoor enclosure as they move around together with their mother, mostly in the morning and around noon. Author: Oliver Le Que, Prague Zoo Visitors to Prague Zoo can now see the two rare additions to the red panda exhibit near the main entrance to the zoo. The four-month-old twins have just started to move around the outdoor enclosure on their own.

The Return of the Wild Horses conservation programme is one of Prague Zoo’s proudest achievements. The return of Przewalski's horses to the wilds of Mongolia began exactly ten years ago after uncommonly bad weather caused the death of a large part of the local population. We spoke to Miroslav Bobek, Director of Prague Zoo,...
