I have collected some photos of butterflies during my walks around the zoo. When I looked at them yesterday, I realized that it is a decent collection and includes some very rare species. Even the experts, who determined the relevant species, refer to a few shots from Sklenářka in their reports.

Prague Zoo’s bush dogs had puppies. Visitors can now watch the puppy pair in the outdoor enclosure. After being here for five years, these South American carnivores managed to breed. This is the first litter of a newly set up pair of these difficult-to-breed wild dogs.

In Darwin Crater we have recently introduced Winkleigh, the wombat female, to the public. And now we also have a contemporary of dinosaurs in this exhibit. It is Wollemia nobilis, whose unbelievable story began to unfold in front of the eyes of people all over the world less than thirty years ago.

Prague Zoo is celebrating an extraordinary breeding success. The team of curator Petr Velenský managed to breed extremely sensitive impressed tortoises. The two hatchlings of these fungivore reptiles were the first ever to be hatched in a zoo on the entire continent. Until recently, they were considered unsuitable for breeding....

Following the winter break, the outdoor enclosure for the gorilla group in the Dja Reserve has reopened. The male, Kisumu, and Duni, the daughter of Prague’s famous Moja, entered the exhibit’s outdoor section for the first time. Last week it was confirmed that Duni is pregnant!

This week, visitors to Prague Zoo can see a newly set up pair of smooth-coated otters. This tropical carnivore is rarely bred in captivity and now inhabits an island opposite the southern pig-tailed macaques in the Indonesian Jungle Pavilion.

When I left my office to watch the couple of hamerkops that were tirelessly carrying material to their already gigantic nest in the aviary under the cliff, Helena Růžičková’s replica from the well-known Czech comic film Sun, Hay and Strawberries came to my mind: “If you build an extension, we’ll add a whole floor!”...

One of the key missions of zoos is to protect biodiversity. Prague Zoo mostly finances its in situ projects with funds from each entry. This has now risen from 5 to 8 CZK. Jana Komrsková, Deputy Mayor for the Environment, made the announcement at today’s opening of the Faces of CITES exhibition.
