Giant Salamander House
In this unique world-class exhibit, you have a rare opportunity to admire the largest amphibians in the world – Chinese Giant Salamanders. Nicknamed “freshwater panda”, these remarkable creatures are amongst the most critically endangered species of animals.

The giant salamanders are not alone in the house: they share it with other highly interesting and rare species native to Chinese mountain forests. The most exceptional feature is, however, the close linkage of the pavilion to the classic literary work of one of the best-known Czech writers, Karel Čapek. It was the giant salamanders which – amongst other matters – became the inspiration for Čapek’s masterpiece, “War with the Newts”. The Giant Salamander House is a tribute to him and his world-famous novel.
