Besides the many other tasks elephants have carried out over the centuries, they have also been used to transport people.
A carriage mounted directly on the elephant's back was called a houdah in India. It could carry troops, hunters, but also the ruling classes, and was either simple and practical or, in contrast, ostentatious and decorated with inlaid gold, silver or gems.
On more navigable terrain, it was possible to harness elephants to a cart. One such a cart, over a hundred years old and imported directly from India, can be seen next to this hut. As with houdahs, the rulers’ ways of travelling were more sophisticated affairs, often in the form of fancy and very large carriages.
