Every year, as October gives way to November, during the darkest nights around the new moon, the most festive time of the year comes for more than a billion people from India to Singapore: Diwali. It is a time of togetherness, generosity, and the celebration of the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

One of the legends about the origins of this five-day festival tells the story of Lord Rama from the epic Ramayana. When he had defeated the demon Ravana and was on his way home to take up the throne after years of exile, he was greeted with clay lamps lighting his path.

Today, people commemorate Diwali with thousands of lights in homes and on the streets. At Prague Zoo, we join in the celebrations, organizing also a popular lantern procession.
