Top Ten Tips for Visiting Prague Zoo

Prague Zoo has officially begun its main season and with it the questions from the public came pouring in: which is the best day to visit the zoo? How to avoid the line at the ticket office? Are there any discounts available? These and many more questions are answered in these top ten tips from an experienced visitor to Prague Zoo.

1. Sunday is quieter than Saturday
Most people head to the zoo on the weekend. If you are deliberating as to which day is best to pay Prague Zoo a visit, then bear in mind a little secret that all seasoned visitors know of: Sunday is always less busy than Saturday. Not only is it easier to find a place to park, but you will also avoid the crowds. Moreover, if you’re planning a trip on a weekday, then the stats show that Tuesday tends to be the least busy!
2. An E-ticket is cheaper with no waiting
Queuing to buy tickets at the cash desk? Not on your nelly, the line is for newbies... A seasoned visitor will buy E-ticket in advance at our e-shop and head straight for the turnstiles. What’s more, they save money too. Whether it’s an adult, child or student ticket, the electronic version is up to 50 crowns cheaper than a paper ticket. That means you can save as much as 150 crowns on a family ticket, which is valid for two adults and up to four children!
You can find more information on buying tickets here: https://vstupenka.zoopraha.cz/
3. Discounts for schools and kindergartens
Speaking of discounts, we’d like to remind you of another very good deal for school groups. Primary and secondary school pupils only pay 100 crowns for admission, while kindergarten pupils pay just 50 crowns. What’s more, teachers can choose from a wide range of themed tours with our expert guide, thus making it a fun way to learn more about biology and science in general!

4. Use the new entrance and public transport stop
Everyone is familiar with the zoo’s iconic main entrance and its Walk of Fame, whilst motorists often use the south entrance near the river by the large car park. But did you know that we have recently opened a brand-new entrance to the zoo? The bus stop is called Sklenářka and is right by the new gorilla pavilion. No crowds, no lines. Plus, if you get there first thing in the morning, you’ll have the Dja Reserve and Mobi, the little baby gorilla, all to yourself. The city buses stop right outside the gate, just as they do at the main entrance. Just head for Podhoří: on the number 234 from Holešovice or the 235 and 236 from Bohnice.
5. Inclement weather is an unexpected bonus
Thinking about visiting the zoo but it’s raining, windy or overcast? Put such fears out of your mind and get your shoes on! We have 15 indoor pavilions. In the Dja Reserve, which opened last year, you can sit in the large auditorium where you can not only watch the gorillas, but also have a snack or charge your mobile. You can also keep dry when visiting the tigers, hippos or giraffes, warm up with orangutans or Komodo dragons in the Indonesian Jungle or walk among the parrots in Rákos’ Pavilion. Take a look at the map and plan your indoor route around Prague Zoo!

6. Ride around the grounds for young and old
A visit to our zoo doesn’t have to be a slog, it can be a free ride! Families with children can hire special carts at the main entrance free of charge, you can then pull your kids around the grounds. If you or your partner have mobility issues, there’s nothing easier than pre-booking a free wheelchair with us or buying a ride on our ZooExpress – which also comes with an expert guide.

7. Bring your dog with you, leave your bags with us
Here at Prague Zoo, we welcome dogs of all sizes. Each visitor is allowed one four-legged friend on a lead. They can go anywhere with you apart from inside the pavilions, walk-through exhibits and playgrounds. So, if you want to look at the animals in the pavilion, you can leave your muzzled mate at the tethering post. On the other hand, you don’t have to carry heavy bags around the grounds with you – simply use the fee lockers at every entrance.
8. Zoo grub for the 21st century
Fried cheese, a hot dog, or an ice cream cone. Of course we have them all! But nowadays you don’t have to rely on fried or fatty food to get your energy. Did you know the Gulab restaurant has several meat-free dishes? Try the black beluga lentils with halloumi cheese or perhaps a vegetarian curry with homemade pita bread. The Oceán restaurant has a different menu of ready-made dishes every day to delight its customers. A21t Obora they make fresh burgers with a guarantee of the best view in Prague and at the Gočar’s Houses you will be transported back to the First Republic with a first-class tenderloin in cream sauce or roast duck. To put it simply, you can dine in style at the zoo!

10. Don’t rush, observe, snap, record, share!
Our last tip? Simply have a great day at our zoo! Don’t try to do everything all at once. Prague Zoo is vast, so you won’t be able to take it all in in one day. Stop by the exhibits, observe the animals’ behaviour, take a breather on a bench by the Hippo House or in the African House, sit in the comfortable auditorium to watch the gorillas or seals and take in what’s happening in front of you. Take your time. If you do manage to snap a nice photo or video, tag Prague Zoo in your Instagram or Facebook story. We are more than happy to share your photo on our official profile!
