Snake records

The fastest, the biggest, the shortest, the longest...

THE FASTEST
Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis)
Mambas can be surprisingly speedy, slithering at 12–15 kph and maybe even up to 18 kph! Just to compare: this is a speed of the jogging human.
THE BIGGEST
Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus)
The longest registered specimen lost by half a metre compared to the reticulated python, but as for the sum of length and weight the anacondas are the biggest of all snakes—females may weigh more than 200 kg!
THE SHORTEST
Two-lined Blind Snake (Leptotyphlops bilineata)
This tiny Caribbean snake living under the ground more resembles an earthworm with its dwarfed eyes and a thin, barely 10 cm long body.
THE LONGEST
Reticulated Python (Python reticulatus)
Almost 10 metres—this is the record length for reticulated pythons in the wild. Other snake giants include several other pythons and the green anaconda, all of them measuring over 6 metres.
THE MOST VENOMOUS
Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus)
When we consider not only the effectiveness of the venom but also its quantity in one bite, the inland taipan is the most venomous snake—its bite could kill up to 100 adults!
THE LONGEST VENOM TEETH
Gaboon Viper (Bitis gabonica)
The venom teeth of this robust viper reach up to about 5 cm—this is nearly as long as your thumb! Most of the time, however, they are almost entirely enclosed in a protective sheath.
