Janita’s baby got acquainted with “aunt” Tamara today
This morning, the one-day-old male elephant, being assisted by the breeders, got acquainted with the first member of the herd, female elephant Tamara. After Tamara, the baby will be gradually introduced also to the other members of the herd in the following days.

Female elephant Tamara, who came with Janita to Prague Zoo from Sri Lanka in 2012, was brought to the common premises to join Janita and her baby after nine o’clock in the morning. “Tamara sniffed the baby and the baby tried to drink milk from her. However, after one unsuccessful attempt, the baby elephant discontinued trying. This is a sign of his having imprinted his mother in his memory very well,” curator Pavel Brandl explained.
Both the female elephants were calm, so the breeders left them with the baby elephant alone in the common premises after half an hour. Later Tamara and Janita ate together and the baby stood between them. The introduction went smoothly.
