EAZA

THE EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF ZOOS AND AQUARIA

Modern zoos form an interconnected network of cooperating institutiions. One of the most important organizations that we are a member of is EAZA - an umbrella organization for more than 300 progressive zoos and aquariums from more than 40 countries in Europe an the Middle east.

HIGH STANDARDS
All EAZA members undergo a rigorous accreditaion process.Animal welfare and health are paramount, therefore all member institutions ensure that breeding standards are as high as possible. Apart from sufficient space, suitable feeding and topquality veterinary care, it can also mean providing the animals with various types of enrichment.

MISSION
EAZA was set up in 1992 to facilitate co.operation within the European zoo and aquarium community and thus helping to keep nature safe from future generations. By sharing their knowledge and working together, EAZA members can realiza their full potential in both breeding and in the fields of education, protection and research.

EX-SITU CONSERVATION
Together, the EAZA members take care of tens of thousands of animals. Many of them belong to species that are already extinct in the wild or are critically endangered. EAZA coordinates breeding for more than 400 of them. The aim is to manage their populations so that they are healthy and sustainable in the long-term and can serve as a safeguard against extinction. This is known as e-situ conservation.

IN-SITU CONSERVATION
Ex situ management of endangered species is just one component in their conservation. EAZA places great emphasis on also helping them in the regions where they naturally occur - in situ. The breeding establishment associated under EAZA spend tens of millions of euros annually for this purpose and run in-situ projects for hundreds of animal species.

PRAGUE ZOO´s MEMBERSHIP
